Special Event Announcement
January 2, 2014
Chillicothe, OH -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio has formally aligned with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio with the goal of providing the impact of one-to-one mentoring services to more children in Ross, Pike, Pickaway, Fayette and Highland Counties.
Under the agreement, effective January 1, 2014, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio will retain its staff, name and independent 501©3 status. The agency’s Board will remain in place to provide vision, direction, governance and local support for the agency.
“The Board and leadership of the agency are very pleased to make this announcement,” says Joyce Atwood, President of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio Board. “Together, we are one of the largest Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies in the country! This alignment will allow our agency to stay focused on our local programming and fundraising, and we will be able to draw upon the resources of a larger agency for some essential office functions, including accounting and information technology.”
For the children of South Central Ohio, there are many benefits. One example is their eligibility to attend Camp Oty’Okwa, which is owned and operated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio in the Hocking Hills. The 700+ acre camp, which served more than 5,000 children last year, combines educational opportunities with a camp experience designed to help children develop self-esteem, independence and leadership skills. Camp Oty’Okwa’s programs are aligned with Ohio’s academic content standards.
This new alignment with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio is all about providing more South Central Ohio kids the benefit of having a caring role model and friend in their life to help them achieve success,” says Christy Schreick, Executive Director of the agency.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio serves children in the five-county area through its Community-based and School-based Mentoring programs. Its programs align with those of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio, which served approximately 8,000 children last year through Community-based and School-based Mentoring programs in Franklin, Delaware, Union, Clark, Champaign and Madison Counties, and Camp Oty’Okwa. As part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, both agencies operate research-based, results-driven programs that have a proven impact on the children they serve.
It is obvious that the community is very supportive of the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio,” says Edward N. Cohn, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio. “We are looking forward to working with Christy and the agency staff; the Board; and the many dedicated volunteers, friends and supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio.”
